Spiritual Sundays and Social Sundays: Gathering in the Space Between

In our increasingly fractured world, finding a place where you can land as you are has become a rare comfort. We spend our weeks navigating busy structures, meeting external expectations and filtering our thoughts through the lens of what is considered correct or incorrect. But human connection requires a different kind of terrain, one that is spacious, open-hearted and rests in gentle curiosity.

At Open Sanctuary, we intentionally clear that space twice a month. Through our Spiritual Sundays and Social Sundays, members of our community pull up a virtual chair in our dedicated Zoom Room to explore deep philosophies, share friendships, and simply exist together.

Here is a glimpse into how these two distinct rhythms help us create a stronger sense of community.

Spiritual Sundays: Curiosity Without Boundaries

On the first Sunday of every month, we gather for Spiritual Sunday. Led by Sarah-Jane, this hour is dedicated to exploration, gentle conversation and shared wonder.

Spiritual Sundays invite us to set down our fixed beliefs and inherited expectations. There is no set agenda, though we have a theme, and there's no requirement for a specific belief system. We welcome those guided by the God or Goddess of their understanding, spirit, or something entirely unnamed and unfolding. Each of us comes here on our own inner journey. Perhaps we'll walk alongside each other for a while, or chat by a crossroad or a bend in the path.

During this hour, we explore:

  • Big questions regarding life, meaning, and the sacred.

  • Lived experiences, listening to how others navigate their inner landscapes.

  • Deep listening, honouring the quiet courage it takes to voice our truths.

The beauty of this dedicated space is that it is an open-hearted hour where different beliefs do not clash. Instead, they complement one another like trees in an ancient forest, rooted in the same earth, but reaching out in their unique ways.

Social Sundays: The Warmth of Friendship

While our spiritual explorations feed the soul, our community equally thrives on the simple, uncomplicated joy of human companionship. Our Social Sundays, on the third Sunday of each month, turn the focus toward friendship, laughter (or tears), and collective care.

In a digital age that often feels isolating, stepping intentionally into a friendly Zoom Room filled with familiar, smiling faces is a reassuring comfort. There is profound value in sharing a laugh, catching up on the small details of our weeks, and making sure every new face feels at home.

These social hours remind us that we don't always have to walk our paths in isolation. Kindness is found in these unhurried moments, in the shared space where we do not have to perform, but where we can enjoy the presence of people who know our names and value our companionship.

Finding Stillness in Connection

Whether we are parsing complex philosophical concepts or laughing over our morning cuppa, the underlying thread of Open Sanctuary remains unchanged: relationship and reverence.

Community is not built on finding people who think exactly like we do. Rather, it is built on creating a safe landing place where diverse practices and beliefs can gather with kindness. In the gentle stillness of these Sunday gatherings, the boundaries that split the modern world begin to dissolve, leaving behind an effortless state of mutual respect, safety and belonging.
